Gardening Science Project for Elementary and Middle School Kids

As we are all adjusting to staying at home, finding projects to entertain and stimulate the kids, and distance learning programs coming in place, I have come up with fun and educational projects for the kids. With spring upon us (though it is snowing outside in Michigan as I write this), I thought it would be great for the kids to take a leadership role in managing some plants and provide structure to it in terms of a science experiment and report to enhance the learning opportunities.

So, I did a pickup order for strawberries, wild flowers, a seed starter tray and dome, and fertilizer. The kids will be responsible for researching the wild flowers and strawberries, what they need, and how they grow. They will need to determine how to manage them in the tray and transplant them into a great spot on our property.

I posted the outline below and will share how it goes!

Here are the components of the Report Outline:



A hypothesis is an idea or explanation that you then test through study and experimentation. For example someone performing experiments on plant growth might report this hypothesis: “If I give a plant an unlimited amount of sunlight, then the plant will grow to its largest possible size.” **Create your own**


  • **what supplies do you need to grow and report the plants**


  1. write out the steps of preparing, planting, growing, and observing the flowers and strawberries** Are there any differences between the two types of plants?


  • What interesting facts can you research and share about strawberries?
  • What interesting facts can you research and share about the wild flowers?
  • Do they need lots of sunshine or shade?
  • How much water do they need?
  • How long does it typically take for them to grow?
  • Are they annuals or perennials?
  • How do you fertilize plants/support their growth?
  • What are typical predators of these plants?


**collect data – create chart for each day that shows actions and observations of planting**

-how much soil, water, was it sunny/cloudy?**

**add pictures of plants as they grow or create a slideshow presentation at the end to discuss the project and your findings**


Write a short paragraph that discusses the overall results of an experimental procedure and explains whether the proposed hypothesis at the beginning of the experiment was correct or not.
